Asheville: A Hallmark-Movie Holiday Without the Family Drama
Trade Holiday Hosting Stress for Mountain Views, Festive Charm, and Quality Family Time in One of America’s Most Magical Thanksgiving Destinations
Discover Why Asheville is One of the Best Multigenerational Holiday Destinations in the Country.

Asheville combines cozy mountain charm, holiday magic, family-friendly activities, and incredible dining to create the perfect Thanksgiving getaway for grandparents, parents, and kids. Discover why it’s one of the best multigenerational holiday destinations in the country.
The Thanksgiving Solution Nobody Talks About
Thanksgiving is supposed to bring families together.
Instead, it often turns into an annual debate about whose turn it is to host.
One side of the family feels like they’re always traveling. The other feels like they’re always cooking. Someone has to clean the house. Someone has to grocery shop. Someone ends up sleeping on a pullout couch from 1971 that has a bar in the middle you cannot escape.
What if nobody had to host?
Enter the Thanksgiving vacation. That’s what makes Asheville such a fantastic Thanksgiving destination for multigenerational families. Instead of gathering at someone’s house, everyone gathers somewhere magical.
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie. Twinkling lights, mountain views, cozy fireplaces, charming downtown streets, holiday decorations, and crisp autumn air create the perfect backdrop for making family memories.
The best part?
Nobody has to wash the dishes afterward.
Why Asheville Works So Well for Multigenerational Travel
Traveling with grandparents, parents, teenagers, and younger children can be challenging because everyone wants something different from a vacation.
Asheville succeeds because it offers a little bit of everything.
Grandparents can enjoy scenic drives and historic landmarks.
Parents can explore restaurants, breweries, spas, and local culture.
Kids can discover nature centers, holiday lights, and outdoor adventures.
And everyone can come together for shared experiences that become family traditions.
It is one of those rare destinations where no one feels like they’re compromising. And it’s really easy for everyone to be together but apart. You know, for those times when you love your family but you want to love them from a little bit of a distance.
Where to Stay: Lodging for the Whole Family
- The Omni Grove Park Inn – If Asheville had an official Thanksgiving headquarters, it would probably be The Omni Grove Park Inn. Set atop Sunset Mountain, the historic resort offers world-class amenities, relaxation, and more while you breathe in the crisp, mountain air.
Families will be able to enjoy indoor and outdoor pools, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, multiple restaurants, holiday decor, and absolutely stunning mountain views.
It feels festive before you even unpack your suitcase.
For grandparents especially, it offers plenty of opportunities to relax without feeling disconnected from the family.

- Renting a Mountain Cabin – For larger families, a mountain cabin can be the perfect solution. We’ve done this in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and it really cannot be said how perfect it is. Some offer amenities like pools, hot tubs, game rooms, pool tables, and fire pits.
Additionally, everyone can have their own bedroom so together-but-apart still applies. Maybe you can even find a cabin that has bunk bed rooms for all the kids. Cousins love sleepovers!
While the point is to avoid cooking, the benefit of a cabin is the full kitchen. So while you may go out for dinner and the actual holiday, save some money by making some meals in-house. And take turns. No one should be doing ALL the work on vacation!
You get the togetherness of a family holiday without forcing everyone into one person’s home. - Downtown Asheville Hotels – Families who prefer walkability may enjoy staying downtown. Downtown Asheville is like a Hallmark movie, which is probably why they actually make some there! When you stay Downtown, your vacation becomes more walkable. You’ll have easy access to restaurants, shopping, holiday events, local galleries, and seasonal entertainment.
Not only do families argue about who is hosting, there is also the “who is driving” argument. So for multigenerational groups, minimizing driving is often a major win.
Activities Grandparents, Parents & Kids Can Enjoy Together
- Biltmore Estate at Christmas – If Asheville feels like a Hallmark movie, the Biltmore Estate is the grand finale. The holiday decorations are spectacular. Grandparents appreciate the history. Parents appreciate the architecture. Kids appreciate the sheer scale and magic of it all. It’s one of the few attractions that genuinely appeals to every generation.
- Winter Lights at the North Carolina Arboretum – Millions of lights transform the gardens into a holiday wonderland. Like Clark Griswold himself put up the decorations! Plus, it’s accessible, family-friendly, and magical. Most importantly, it’s something the entire family can enjoy together rather than splitting into separate activities.
- Scenic Drives Along the Blue Ridge Parkway – Sometimes the best family activity is simply spending time together. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers breathtaking views without requiring strenuous hiking. I know, I know – this brings into play the whole “who’s driving” argument, but sometimes these arguments create the best memories. Every family road trip seems to create one legendary story. Hopefully yours involves mountain views instead of automotive emergencies. Grandparents can enjoy the scenery. Kids can spot wildlife. Parents can take photos they’ll immediately post on social media. Everybody wins.
Activities for Grandparents
Let’s face it. With multigenerational families, not everyone likes the same activities. Luckily Asheville offers something for everyone. Up first: Grandparents
- Historic Asheville – Many grandparents appreciate activities that combine history, beauty, and a more relaxed pace, which make Historic Asheville perfect (honestly, that all sounds awesome to me, too – crap, I’m old?). Take in historic architecture tours, The Grove Arcade, local art galleries, and Biltmore history tours. These experiences offer a slower pace while still feeling engaging.
- Spa Experiences – We all love a little pampering, and parents and grandparents often appreciate a little downtime. The Omni Grove Park Inn Spa is one of the most celebrated resort spas in the Southeast and makes an excellent escape while the younger generations tackle more energetic activities.

Activities for Parents
Next up: let’s find some activities for Mom and Dad and Auntie and Unc to get into without the fun of their wonderful offspring (said with all the love in the world…)
- Asheville’s Food Scene – Asheville consistently ranks among the South’s best food destinations. The adults can enjoy some great farm-to-table restaurants, craft cocktails, local coffee shops, and excellent holiday dining experiences.
- Breweries & Craft Beverage Experiences – Let’s be honest. After coordinating three generations of family travel, some parents may appreciate a local brewery. Thankfully, Asheville is famous for them.
Activities for Kids & Teens
And, of course, let’s not forget the youngest among us! They want to have cousin fun, mom, dad, auntie, and unc optional.
- Western North Carolina Nature Center – This is truly a favorite for younger travelers. The center offers opportunities to see native wildlife while enjoying easy walking paths. Also great for younger and older cousins, in case there’s an extended age range (my family? Oldest is 20, youngest is 7 months. If you spread out to both sides of our families we have 28 to 7 months!)
- Holiday Shopping & Treats – Downtown Asheville offers a ton of things kids love, including candy shops, toy stores, holiday markets, and local bakeries. Kids often enjoy exploring downtown more than parents expect.
Create New Family Traditions
One of the best things about a Thanksgiving vacation is that it creates traditions that belong to everyone. Instead of gathering in the same dining room every year, your family might visit the Biltmore together each Thanksgiving; or plan a different family vacation every year. Perhaps even rotating who plans the vacation (this way it’s not always on one person to plan and coordinate logistics). The point is creating new family traditions can help keep families close together and avoid a lot of holiday stress.

Thanksgiving Dining Without the Stress
One of the best parts of celebrating Thanksgiving on vacation is not having to cook. Many Asheville restaurants offer special Thanksgiving menus.
- The Omni Grove Park Inn – A popular choice for holiday dining and Thanksgiving buffets. Extra easy for those who also choose to stay here.
- Corner Kitchen – A local favorite known for elevated Southern cuisine. Located in Biltmore Village, this farm-to-table restaurant is a vital part of the community, which makes it one of my favorites!
- Posana – Perfect for families seeking a more refined Thanksgiving experience. This upscale restaurant serves local seasonal cuisine perfectly paired with craft cocktails and wine.
- Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar – A crowd-pleasing option with approachable Southern comfort food.YUM. Thank me later.
The biggest advantage with each restaurant? Nobody has to spend all day in the kitchen.
Why I’m the Right Travel Advisor for Your Multigenerational Thanksgiving
Planning travel for one family is easy, but planning for grandparents, parents, teenagers, and young children at Thanksgiving? That’s an entirely different challenge.
Someone wants luxury, while someone else wants affordability. Someone needs accessibility accommodations and downtime, while someone else wants activities every minute. And then, of course, someone wants absolutely no activities at all.
Where my expertise comes in? I find the balance.
I help families choose accommodations that fit everyone’s needs, coordinate holiday dining reservations, identify activities that appeal across generations, and create itineraries that allow for both togetherness and personal downtime.
Most importantly, I help remove the stress that often comes with holiday planning.
Because Thanksgiving should be about spending time together and making unforgettable memories, not arguing about whose house everyone has to visit this year.
